The Church and Friary of St Francis, known locally as Gorton Monastery
The Church and Friary of St Francis, known locally as Gorton Monastery.

The Monastery is a former Franciscan Church and Friary which was completed in 1872. It was designed by Edward Welby Pugin (1834– 1875), son of Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin designer of the interior of the Palace of Westminster. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of High Victorian Gothic architecture in the UK. Edward’s son Peter Paul Pugin also worked on the Monastery, designing the high altar and others in the church.

The Monastery became derelict when the congregation moved away in the 1970s, after more than a century of being at the heart of a thriving community.

Over two long decades most of the original features have been conserved and reinstated in the building.
Over two long decades most of the original features have been conserved and reinstated in the building.

With the building in ruins, it was put on the list of the World’s 100 Most Endangered Sites, (alongside the Taj Mahal and the ancient ruins of Pompeii). Then a passionate couple and a group of extraordinary volunteers stepped forward and, over two long decades, this magnificent sanctuary was brought back from oblivion and as many as possible of the original features were conserved and reinstated in the building.

During the show you will be able to learn more about The Monastery’s heritage and its restoration story!
